Preparing & giving effective presentations

Network:
HPSU Skillnet
Duration 1 day
Number of Places 12
Course Fee Please contact Philip Kelly
Subjects Taught Introductions and objectives
• Planning and preparing for a presentation. This section will explore what is involved in planning, preparing and developing an effective presentation. The participants will explore what the aim of their presentation is and what they want the audience to do as a result of attending their presentation. Discussions will then move on the importance of understanding their audience, the role it plays in developing presentations and in delivery.

• Developing the content. The section will move on to explore how to develop the content from initial preparation work: main points must cover, supporting points and building in stories, metaphors, examples to create and keep interest and attention.

• Effective openings and closings. This section will then explore how to open and close for impact.
• Use of visual aids. Many people believe that their slides are their presentation. This section will explore the role of visual aids, how to create them so that they add to the presentation and use them effectively.

• Delivery skills. In this section we explore the importance of delivery and the skills of the presenter in this area. The effective use of voice and body language will be discussed to engage the audience.

• Managing nerves. The reasons for nerves, techniques to manage nerves and role of preparation and practice in managing nerves will be explored.

• Dealing with questions. Questions are a natural part of presentations and should be greeted positively. We will explore the reasons for questions, how to appreciate the value of questions and how effective preparation helps to manage all questions – even the ones you cannot answer.

• Practice presentations. An important aspect of this course is practice and feedback. Each participant will be required to do a short presentation. Constructive feedback will be given. Each participant will then put into practice the feedback given by presenting again with further feedback. Each participant is able to feel and notice the improvement from presentation one to presentation two. This is a hugely confidence building process and enables them to return to the workplace knowing the improvement they have made and how to continuously improve the quality and impact of their presentations.

Participants should be prepared to deliver a mini presentation (approximately 10 minutes) on a topic of their choice, which can be either work related or a topic of general interest. Participants will receive feedback on their delivery, use of slides and content. To ensure maximum benefit from this workshop each person should bring with them typical content.

Enrolment and Start Dates Comment Enrolment takes place at the start of the course.
