Course Content Programme Outline

TA for Mediators is a 2 day experiential workshop, designed to enhance the quality and effectiveness of how we communicate and respond to other people’s communication during a mediation session. Imagine what it would be like to show up to a mediation session completely free of bias or judgement and communicating in a clear and transparent way imagine never getting ‘hooked’ in any way, or allowing our own buttons to be pressed by the responses or reactions of those being mediated.

TA for Mediators will provide insight into the impact of our own role in the mediation process, our contribution to its success or otherwise. It supports us in understanding in a deeper way the dynamics at play in how people communicate and react to each other and to us, as mediator, and will help in identifying the games that people play in these interactions. The 2 days will equip you with a deep understanding and skill to be able to notice what’s going on behind the games, and offer you the ability to gently guide those being mediated into a more effective space where real progress can be made.

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a psychology and theory of human behaviour and communication developed by Eric Berne, MD (c. 1960). It is also used in educational settings, in management and communication to help people stay in clear communication and avoid setting up unproductive confrontation. In fact, TA can be used in any field where there is a need for understanding individuals, relationships and communication. It provides insight into where relationships and communication can break down and what can be done to achieve enhanced communication. I can’t think of a better field than Mediation to engage with the power of what TA has to offer.

The 2 day workshop is experiential and interactive with ample time for participants to make sense of the concepts by applying them to their particular scenarios and so begin integrating them into their mediation practice and lived experience.
Outline of the 2 Day Programme

You will be invited to complete an Ego State Self-Assessment Questionnaire in advance of Day 1.
· Transactional Analysis (TA) - Eric Berne – Background
· Philosophy of TA and linking that to the Philosophy of Mediation
· Our Ego States / Review of Questionnaire
· Stroke Theory
· Drama Triangle / Winners Pyramid
· Discounting
· Trading Stamps
· I’m OK, You’re OK (Our Life Positions)
· Linking I’m OK You’re OK to the Ladder of Inference
· Our Drivers / Working Styles – knowing what drives your motivation and making them work for you
· Our 7 Sources of Power

• Consider the dynamics contained in people’s interactions with each other – understanding and enhancing these interactions is one path to solving any potential communication problems thus enhancing your mediation process.

• Inform your thinking and understanding of yourself and others, why people behave and do things as they do which will free you from any potential bias or judgement.

• Improve the overall quality and effectiveness of your communication approach in mediation, thus enhancing trust and engagement.

• Learn to choose how to respond and act in a more useful way in the mediation process, rather than reacting impulsively if your own buttons get pushed.

• Understand what’s going on when people ‘say’ one thing and ‘mean’ something totally different and help you to respond appropriately to progress the mediation in a more effective way.

• Describe and understand, through an easily accessible language, our own experiences, reactions and behaviours in response to those we mediate.
