Methods of Assessment Participants are required to complete a project on an area directly related to a current issue for their work area in their company as part of this programme.

A written report on the project will be assessed for the purposes of certification.

Eligibility Often people are promoted because they are good at what they do and are reliable and trustworthy. However, the knowledge and skills required when a manager in an SME are very different to those when a worker. Managers often learn by doing which means making mistakes and learning from them. This can at times be extremely costly.

This particular programme has been designed to assist managers develop some of the skills and knowledge required so that they are more effective in their roles at an earlier stage by offering concise and relevant information and learning and that is relevant to the challenges that they are facing.

Course Content Training Aim
The overall aim is to equip managers with a toolbox of management skills i.e. the interpersonal skills required to get the most out of their staff through good communication and people and personal management techniques, and business skills which will help them manage projects or their area of work more effectively.

Programme Objectives
Specific and detailed learning content will be presented under individual module plans below. In general terms, the objectives of this programme will include the following:
• Improve interpersonal skills to be able to better communicate with staff and colleagues
• Learn how to delegate, motivate and give feedback to staff and so improve team performance
• Better knowledge of employment legislation to be able to manage disciplinary and grievance procedures, including dealing with bullying and harassment.
• Better knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and run a safe workplace.
• Understand financial terminology and be able to use basic costings, P&L accounts, Balance Sheets and Cash Flow Projections.
• Learn how to manage your time to enable you to manage yourself and your staff more effectively
• Plan and implement a relevant improvement project in your company
• Ensure that your reports and presentations are getting their message through.

Mentoring
There will be 2 days of mentoring per participant. This will be arranged individually with each participant.

Comment Certification
Participants who successfully complete the company improvement project and related report and presentation are eligible for certification to achieve FETAC Level 6 Component Certificates in Business Management and in Communications.
